Container Storage on the Playa

I need your help to settle a bet.

I think there's a real need and desire for container storage out on the playa. My wife isn't so sure.

Seems to me that there are a lot of folks who go to Burning Man like we do... have a few boxes full of BM gear, clothes, playa bikes and camp infrastructure that make the trek out to the playa, get dusty, get boxed back up (and sometimes cleaned up), and come all the way home, not to be touched again until it's time to go back out. Seems like a waste of resources, time and space to me. Isn't there a way to simplify this process?

Here's the basic idea: we drop a container at your camp, which you fill up with all your dusty Burning Man gear, then we come pick it up for you and store it until next year's burn, when it's waiting for you when you get back on playa. Variations on this theme include container size (one size for camps of 3-4 people, the other those 20' shipping containers for big theme camps), use of containers during the festival as kitchens or shelter, transport of containers from or to your home, perhaps stored for a year or two in between. We could store your bike for you for the year, so all you have to do is pack 4 to a car (plus food) and just show up. Storing art cars is another possibility, although most likely a bit further down the road. You get the idea.

To set this up as a business (not profit-centric, keeping to BM principles, but still a business) will require a serious investment of time and money on our part, with no guarantee of participants. If I send out a bunch of emails/posts like this one, and get practically no response, it will seem like a pretty obvious sign. Similarly, if all the interest comes when everyone's packing up on Sunday after the burn, we won't have been able to plan for it. So we need to know: would something like this be of interest to you, and if so, can you take 4-8 minutes to tell me so, and how, and why? Or if there is someone you think might be interested in using a service like this, can you forward this to them and encourage them to respond in the next day or two? The link again:

Playa Suicide
A Burning Man participant was found dead this morning, hanging from the inside of a two-story high tent, according to Mark Pirtle, special agent in charge for the Bureau of Land Management.

The apparent suicide would be the festival's first in its 21 year history, Pirtle said.

Pershing County coroners are investigating the scene and preparing to remove the body. Pirtle said the man was hanging for two hours before anyone in the large tent thought to bring him down. "His friends thought he was doing an art piece," Pirtle said.

A makeshift morgue is being set up at the law enforcement command center on the outskirts of Black Rock City. Pirtle said authorities can not release information on the dead man's name until next of kin is notified.

The incident has gone unnoticed by most of the 36,000 revelers who have already arrived. The city's population is on pace to hit 46,000, Pirtle said, a fourteen percent increase from last year.

hey did anyone get any pics of that amazing white robot.. it looked like a girraffe and you could pet its head and it would wiggle its ears and talk to you.. it was absolutly amazing work of art and engineering!!! the two creators were rocken white jumpsuits...... it was super cool.. i would love to see some pics of it.....

Missing/lost pix!

Hey fellow photo buffs! I had my camera right up until the Man burned, then it fell out of its carry case when biking back towards PEX.
I would have thought that for sure it would have been turned in by now, and sadly it hasnt.
I've posted on eplaya.
I've looked through the lost & found tribe.
I've done all I could possibly do to put the word out to find it.
Since there's been no word, I've just been looking for my pictures. The new owner of my camera wouldnt just coldly delete some of the downright brilliant pictures I got, right? There has to be some posted somewhere, since they really are pretty spectacular - IMHO.

So... my friend that was sitting next to me for the sunrise on Thursday snapped the shot I posted to this tribe's album, maybe a similar one can be found? *sigh*

It was a panasonic lumix, and there's a picture of the camera and myself in my own tribe album. Please please please get in touch if you think you might have a lead! Your karmic returns will be mighty, believe that!

I'm wondering if anyone has some photos they could point me to of one art piece that was a mirror platform with four poles and a fire canopy.
I just posted a sketch I drew of it in my photos.

If they happen to also have a white woman wearing a brown head wrap dancing on it -- that would be awesome, but really I just want any photos of that piece. I was so lost in the moment that I didn't take any photos of it.

Hey now~! Here are my Burning Man pics from this year, and what a fun year it was! Hopefully, you stopped by our theme camp, Putt Putt Playa at Esplanade and 8:00 and played a round of putt putt with us. Each of us adopted one of the 9 1/2 holes. My wife and I adopted a hole and called it Psilly Psymon's Psychedelic Psircus, where we had three giant mushrooms and a psychedelitron, which, if you stared at it for 30 seconds would make the mushrooms either grow or shrink, depending on which way the psychedelitron was spinning. It was a lot of fun!

Feel free to delete this post if it's annoying, but I'm looking for any pictures of myself on the SVP stage. I realized recently that I have no pictures of myself with my fans, my favorite toy. I was spinning them on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights at the Shiva Vista Project stage and at the Philadelphia Experiment... I had dreadlocks (although tied up with a skull-printed bandana) and was wearing, most of the time, some variation on black bra, undies, and tights/thigh-highs. I had cameras when I got to BM, and lost them in the shuffle... Any pictures would be much appreciated!

I didn't focus much on photography this year, largely because I'm unhappy
with the condition of my camera, and also because there are so many great
photographers at BM, I didn't feel like "competing" with them. Therefore,
most of my pics are of things I just happened upon with my camera, rather
than going out and trying to document all of the great things there were to
see.

the light saber battle?!

So the one moment I didn't have my camera with me at BM last year was the moment I stumbled upon a light saber battle at dusk. It was surreal and hysterical and ridiculous and scenic, like so many other moments at BM, and I have regretted repeatedly that I got no footage of it. I can picture it in my mind, a couple hundred of us wielding multi-colored, glowing light sabers engaged in an epic battle with the man glowing int he background.

Does ANYONE have pics of this glorious moment they can share with me? I would be so grateful to see them and show them to my kids to prove that their mom REALLY WAS in a giant light saber battle at BM!

GIVING A SHOUT OUT TO ALL OF YOU HOT PLAYA PHOTOGRAPHERS

I have a friend getting married out at The Temple of Forgiveness on Thursday Night around 8:30 PM, and she hasn't arranged for anyone to photograph the wedding. This is a sad thing, because she has poured tons of time and energy into making the most incredible, luminous wedding dress EVER, and it surely will be an incredible shot for anyone who is out there! This girl is the Costume Goddess of the Playa-she has been in the fashion show every year since 2000 and even has a whole Tribe dedicated to her costume creations (check out "Blondie's Closet")

SO- if you are in the area of the Temple Thursday night and have any free time, could you please come by take a few shots. If you could mail a link or the photos to "scampa@myway.com" your stock in photography and good karma will go up considerably. You will probably get drinks out of it if you are spotted as well!

I rode in the critical tits bike ride and had a great time! Unfortunately I did not get any photos of my girlfriend and I, if you took photos that day maybe you will remember me and have a photo of us.

PS I was painted with a little bit of purple latex, like flowers. My girlfriend too but hers were blue and green.

has anyone any knowledge of this wonderful tiny exhibit? It was at least a 15 minute walk from the belgian waffle/the stix/uchronia/the aardvark into deep space lit only with a luminescent blue light. Upon arriving, one sees a bubble gum machine that dispenses white bubble gum balls with the OM symbol on it. AND, there are three yoga poses to do while there. Anyone know what I am talking about? I really want to say thank you to the person(s) who did it and see a picture...

--Sadly we had not one but two camera malfunctions on the Playa and it looks like the only photo I have is one I took in my driveway! Please help me keep a promise

I need help finding the people I photographed. On the return trip back to Philly one of my bags was misplaced by the airline. I was not to upset at first because well it was just laundry, however later I discovered my note book was mixed in as well. To make a long story short I need to keep a promise and mail out the pictures I just finished sorting. If anyone knows any of the people shown in MY PHOTOS please have them contact me so I can mail them a CD.

Thought I'd let any poor starving burners know that I've compiled seven galleries of yet more Burning Man '06 photos! They're all neatly presented and easy to navigate. Couple small sets on S.F. Decompression included too.

The shots are mostly from my Kava Island campmates and feature a wide variety of perspectives and styles ranging from early morning tranquil beauties to heady tripped-out night reveling to stately sunset warm panos to caught-in-Wednesday's-sandstorm-near-the-Belgian (ok, ok... the "Uchronia"... there, are you happy now Belgian people? ;-).

Special request: If anyone happens to have photos of my band Baby Seal Club playing on the Playa, please let me know. We had such a great time playing live acoustic music to y'all and would love to see it in action.

We had a Center Cafe gig on Friday around 4pm, a lengthy show on top of Flip's Pirate Bus (from the wonderful Easel Park), and a couple scattered quickie shows in our camp at 3:20 and Destiny.

I had the interesting fate of having a blocked artery and the need for an angioplasty in the middle of the night, early Saturday, 24 hours before departure for BRC. Talk about surprises.. man!.. They sprung me Monday morning, but it still just wasn't in the cards to go..

I'm one of the unlucky ones that was not able to make it this year. But my art installation did, thanks to my wife and my good buddy Orion. It was called The Warning, a 8 foot tall fiberglass head at around 1:30. I'm really looking for night shots, because at night it had interactive LED lights and an infra-red video camera. If there is video i would PAY for it. I just want to see how people interacted with it. ......

I was behind the 'Man, when he met his timely demise and got as close to around 30 to 40 feet away from around 50 vortices that came whipping off the base. Amazing what a nikon coolpix camera can do~

camera settings for great nighttime photos???

I have an Olympus Camedia C-60 6.1 megapixel digital camera. And I should take a remedial photography class, I know, but can anyone tell me what settings I should set on the camera to get good clear night photos of the playa at night? I'm looking to capture images of EL wire and fire in all its glory and most of the time I just get streaks on a black background. When I use the automatic "nighttime" setting, I get really crappy results too. Every now and then I'll get a really great shot, but I don't know how I'm making that happen. Any pointers out there for me and others like me?

buses available for Burners and other progressive types

I'm a travellin' fool, mostly to the third world. Lotsa time in Central America, the Caribbean, and SE Asia.
I also travel by my buses, I have 27 or them, so if you need a bus, parts, or just advice, just yell

I'm still new to this tribe thing, but I am a nice person, and have the best buses in the world. I use school buses to haul medical and material aid to some of poorest places in the world (Haiti, Chiapas Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) and buy and sell them, and bus parts to support the project. I take every penny i make and convert it directly back into school supplies, medical supplies, tools, generators, and whatever the folks ask for specifically, (no junk, no used clothing) and then drive it down in person (except Haiti, that's $6000 thru the Panama Canal. Ouch)

I sell buses to folks that are 100% functioning in every way when they leave my hands, and also give any body thirty days to return the bus if unsatisfied. Nobody ever has, but it's OK, I'll just sell it to somebody else. you will also get a lifetime of free advice before and after you get a bus from me, I'm avaiable 7 days a week within reason, and after having dismantled 14 buses, and owning about 60,I am pretty knowledgable about their inner workings. Also got lots of good used bus parts, at the best price anywhere in the US. Ii have no overhead, just my Mazda mini truck and some tools.

Just had to send a HUGE thanks out to Blue Insomnia and Ninja Skillz for putting together what turned out to be one of the most beautiful weekend events I've been to since coming to LA.

my mind is still reeling from the amazing time. I've got a ton to write about it. I had such a great time hanging out with everybody that I can't even go into it in a few sentences... but the pictures gave me such a smile that I wanted to get them out to everybody asap

we had film a israeli student film, in the burning man of 2003-whit the confirmation and approval of the burning media team.
and we looking for some video material (photograph,filming) from the burning man event(it is not make a difference from whice year) ,the material can be of- art installation,persons,the burn or any ather material that can transmit the burning man spirit.

we trying to bring the burningman event to the public in israel and the Middle East,and ther was all ready 2 burn in tel aviv ,israel,so any help will be blessed since we lost some of cassette from our filming at the 2003 burn,and really want to do the best film we can do.

TRIBE INVITE -- Photography and Zen

Hello fellow photographers,

I'm cross-posting this on all of the major photo tribes, so fogive me if you see it a bunch.

<o> Photography and Zen <o> is a tribe dedicated to the ways that photographs impact our lives. This tribe is mostly for serious picture takers, but I've also invited snapshot takers, models, and people who don't know the front end of a camera from the back. We sometimes lose site of the non-photographers, butwithout them, we wouldn't have anyone to show our pictures to!

There are plenty of photo sites on Tribe that talk about the technical side, but photography is much more than that. Millions of pictures are taken every second. We inadvertently see hundreds of photos every day. They're a major part of modern society.

Some of the topics will be:

• The ethics of candid shots (especially at BM)
• Becoming one with your subject
• Representing yourself as a photographer with regard to other photographers
• What photo buyers look for in an image
• The significance of photography as an art form
• Photography as an instrument to bring about social change
• Critique of images
• The UNtechnical techniques (such as knowing your instrument enough that it becomes second nature thus enabling you to lose yourself in your art -- stuff like that)
• Erotica vs. porn
• And anything else you want to talk about

So come on by and share your thoughts and/or images.
